“Ouch.”

Julie groaned before sitting on the bed and leaning forward. She rolled up her pant leg, staring at her scarred flesh from the dozens of surgeries she’d had.

She closed her eyes for a moment, remembering the sound of the car, tires skidding just moments before it hit her, five years ago. The days she’d spent in the hospital. The therapy. She’d been so happy when she’d finally been able to go home.

“Julie?”

She opened her eyes, turning as Josslyn poked her head in the room. “What’s up?”

“Jasmine and Jade are going to be back soon,” Josslyn said, her gaze landing on Julie’s leg. “Are you okay?”

Julie nodded. “Yeah. I think I was on my feet a little too long today.” She crossed to the closet, pulling out one of her old t-shirts. “I’ll be down in a minute,” she said, glancing over her shoulder at Josslyn as she pulled the shirt over her head.

“Julie…” Josslyn trailed off, her eyes zoning in on the scars on Julie’s back. “I guess I didn’t realize how many scars you had,” she said. “Why didn’t you tell me what happened? I would have come back and helped you.”

“Jade was here, and I really couldn’t be mediator between the two of you while I was recovering,” Julie said, pulling the shirt over her head. “God, Joss. That car…” she shuddered. “I still hear it in my dreams. The sound of those tires skidding, the way it hit me. Even lying there, motionless, blood pouring from my body as the sirens filled my ears. I don’t want to feel like that ever, ever again.”

“You won’t,” Josslyn said, stepping forward. She wrapped her arm around her sister, then pulled her close, breathing in a sigh of relief, thankful she was still here. “Because I would never let anything happen to you. Not when we’re finally together again.”

“Between you and Jade, you’re going to freaking smother me,” Julie muttered, shoving Josslyn away. “But I’ve gotta do my exercises, Joss. If I don’t, my spine, it…”

“I know,” Josslyn said. “Go ahead. I’ll see you downstairs.”

Julie watched her disappear around the corner, and she fell back onto the bed again, feeling suddenly very tired. She closed her eyes, stretching her arms over her head.

“One.”

She pulled herself up.

“Two.”

She pulled herself down.

“Three.”

She pulled herself up once more.

“Four.”

“Julie!”

The scream sounded downstairs and she jumped. “Josslyn?” She jumped to her feet, racing through the door. She rounded the corner, skidding down the steps. “Josslyn? Josslyn!”

“Julie!”

She jumped down the last step and froze when she saw a man walking toward Josslyn. Her eyes widened when she saw the knife. “Oh my God! Josslyn!” She lunged forward, wrapping her hand around the candlestick lying on the table next to her. She tossed the item at the man. “Who is this?”

“How the hell should I know?” Josslyn cried, flicking her hands. “Julie! I can’t freeze him!”

“That’s because I’m stronger than you, Witch,” the man said, smiling as he flung his hand out. Cobwebs spewed from his fingers, propelling toward Josslyn.
